Community Dinner for 3000 People in Matara District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka

Poson Poya Day is a significant occasion for Buddhists in Sri Lanka, marking the arrival of Buddhism in the country. On June 20, 2024, the Global Humanitarian Aid Foundation (GHAF) marked the sacred occasion of Poson Poya Day with a special event designed to bring joy and nourishment to 3,000 villagers from seven different villages.

The event took place at Godauda Siri Sumanarama temple in the Matara District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, a serene location that perfectly embodied the spirit of Poson Poya Day. We set up a stall inside the temple to serve dinner to the attendees, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy a meal in the peaceful and sacred environment.

The preparations for the event were extensive. Volunteers and Committee members from our organization and the local community worked tirelessly to ensure that everything was ready for the big day. From cooking a variety of traditional dishes to setting up the dining area, every detail was meticulously planned and executed.

As the villagers arrived at the temple, their faces lit up with anticipation and joy. Many had travelled from afar, and the sight of the well-organized stall and the aroma of delicious food made the journey worthwhile. The villagers were welcomed warmly and served generous portions of food, with no limitations, allowing everyone to eat to their heart’s content. 

It was truly heartwarming to see families and friends sharing a meal together, engaging in conversations, and celebrating the spirit of Poson Poya Day with joy and gratitude.

The gratitude and happiness expressed by the villagers were truly touching. They appreciated the effort and kindness extended to them, and their heartfelt thanks were the greatest reward for all of us involved in the event. It was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of coming together to support one another.

The event was not just about providing a meal; it was about creating a sense of unity and belonging. It was an opportunity for people from different villages to connect, share their experiences, and strengthen their bonds. In a world that often feels divided, events like these highlight the beauty of human connection and the positive impact of collective goodwill.

As the evening came to a close, we reflected on the success of the event and the joy it brought to so many people. Poson Poya Day is a celebration of spiritual enlightenment and cultural heritage, and this community dinner added a new dimension to the festivities. It was a day filled with love, laughter, and gratitude—a day that will be remembered by everyone who attended.
